    Csíky László dícsérete

I have volunteered to pledge my (unsolicited) support for Mr László Csíky, who fully deserves it since those who can do what he does, can think the way he thinks and can create the way he creates are few and far between indeed!

Sadly, but I suppose inevitably, I know only of a handful of people in this peculiar field, worthy of the name 'outstanding artist' or 'unique personality'.

One of my personal favourites, Mr Tibor Kaján, the uncrowned king of drawing, is the very picture of individuality, whose path twists and turns where hardly anyone has gone before.

(Incidentally, I can't wait to have my picture drawn by Mr Kaján, because when it happens, from that moment I will really know who I am!)

Recently he drew the communist politician György Aczél with 3 Ts (the initials marking his cultural policy: support, tolerance, prohibition), a concise association with a bygone era. While I am on the subject of association, László Csíky cannot truly be introduced and evaluated without mentioning the name of Honore Daumier!
It is his mastery of the caricature that guarantees immortality to the characters of "The Connoisseur", the "Lawyers" and "The Jury", gives meaning to the word 'immortal', and ensures the timelessness of Daumier himself, along with the figures of Cervantes: Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

And now, placed alongside the 'classics', here are the ones whose luck didn't hold: the stranded 'caricaturists' of one-time weeklies and monthlies.
    Ferenc Sajdik,
    Hihi, alias István Hegedűs,
    Jenő Dallos,
    Béla Tettamanti,
    László Réber and
Líviusz Gyulai... Well, these are also artists with intellect, humour, and 3B pencils to make their point.
Why did the satirical weekly 'Lúdas Matyi' ('Matt, the Gooseboy') cease publication? It was music to our ears and souls from the 50s onwards, right until its disappearance. I am still in mourning for 'Lúdas Matyi'!

Mr László Csíky's full-blown humour is something that is treading a thin line between the acerbic and the grotesque. Very original.

I'll try to do my best to sum him up.
He is well-educated, well-prepared, witty and loves to score a bulls-eye with his arrows.

So, if it's Albert Szent-Györgyi, why not give him a green pepper-shaped nose? (Vitamin C, etc.)

He takes careful aim at politicians, artists and celebrities...
His works are characterized by the appropriate choice of material, a thorough research of the theme, meticulous execution and the utmost care.

He is better known abroad - in professional circles, of course - than at home.

That's why I must hereby declare that László Csíky superbly renders today's Hungary and our age - the year 2004. Through his spectacles he sees into the hearts and becomes the chronicler of a fabulous and grotesque world, which he unfolds with unashamed curiosity, with great affection, and in a way that only he knows how.

I enjoy László Csíky's art and I truly believe that he has proved himself.
I have no hesitation in recommending this doctor from Szentes, Hungary, to the attention of the Kossuth Prize Committee.

Yours faithfully: Pál Kő - Kossuth Prize winning sculptor, university professor
